Tropical Storm Melissa is projected to become a uncommon highest-level hurricane as it veers towards Jamaica, causing deadly flash flooding and mudslides.

The cyclone, which registered winds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is presently veering north-west in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to make landfall by Tuesday, based on data from hurricane specialists.

Alerts of blackouts and damage to infrastructure have been released as the hurricane produces up to 76cm of rain and coastal flooding as high as 13ft above typical tides. "Seek shelter now," inhabitants have been told.

The cyclone is the 13th named storm in this year's Atlantic season, which usually concludes in November.

Mudslides presently generated by the cyclone have caused two deaths in the country, according to emergency services.

The hurricane is forecast to move across the island nation by Wednesday before traveling via the Greater Antilles and entering the open ocean.
